Abstract
The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:0774064/IV(b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or methyl, and R1 represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon-carbonyl radical containing less than nine carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof wherein R1 represents hydrogen by contacting testosterone or 10-normethyltestosterone with oxygenating substances produced by the growing fungus Penicillium urticae. The 15-hydroxy steroid may be acylated to produce a 15-acyloxy steroid acylate, e.g. with ketene, ketenes of selected acids, selected acids, acid anhydrides and acid chlorides. Examples disclose the production of 15 - hydroxytestosterone, 15,17-diacetoxy-, 15,17 - diformyloxy -, 15,17 - di - [(b - cyclopentyl) propionyloxy] - 15,17 - dipropionyloxy-, 15,17-dibenzoyloxy-, and 15,17 - di(trimethylacetoxy) - 4 - androstene - 3 - one, and the corresponding 10-normethyl compounds. Other esters mentioned are the dimethyl acetoxy, butyryloxy, valeryloxy, hexanoyloxy, heptanoyloxy, octanoyloxy, phenylacetoxy, toluoyloxy, cyclopentylformyloxy, acryloxy and cyclohexylformyloxy, and the half and diesters of malonic, maleic, succinic, glutaric and adipic acids.
