Abstract
Base materials for powders and liniments are prepared by emulsion polymerizing monomers of plastics innocuous to the tissue of skin in the presence of emulsifiers to produce spherical particles of diameter less than 3m , dessicating the emulsion and disintegrating the product. Alternatively the polymer emulsion may be treated with a water-soluble solvent, e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, and the agglomerated particle complexes of diameter 3 to 30m filtered, washed, dried and the product disintegrated. Suitable monomers are styrene, methyl methacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, allyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Suitable emulsifiers are esters of higher fatty acids with polyhydric alcohols, e.g. sorbitol monostearate, sorbitol mono-oleate, sorbitol trioleate, polyoxyethylene sorbitol mono-oleate and polyoxyethylene trioleate, or quaternary ammonium compounds, e.g. stearyl dimethyl ethyl ammonium ethyl sulphate. Suitable catalyst are ammonium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. Soluble perfumes and dyes may be added to the monomers. Perfumes, e.g. bornyl acetate, dyes, ultramarine blue, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, zinc stearate, glycerine and water may be incorpooated in the polymers.ALSO:Base materials for powders and linaments are prepared by emulsion polymerizing monomers of plastics innocuous to the tissue of skin in the presence of emulsifiers to produce spherical particles of diameter less than 3m , desiccating the emulsion and disintegrating the product. Alternatively the polymer emulsion may be treated with a water-soluble solvent, e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, and the agglomerated particle complexes of diameter 3 to 30m filtered, washed, dried and the product disintegrated. Suitable monomers are styrene, methyl methacrylate iso-butyl methocrylate allyl methacrylate and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate. Suitable emulsifiers are esters of higher fatty acids with polyhydric alcohols, e.g. sorbitol monostearate, sorbitol monooleate, sorbitol trioleate, polyoxyethylene sorbitol monooleate and polyoxyethylene trioleate, or quaternary ammonium compounds, e.g. stearyl dimethyl ethyl ammonium ethyl sulphate. Suitable catalysts are ammonium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. Perfumes, dyes, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, zinc stearate, glycerine and water may be incorporated in the product. Perfumes and dyes which are soluble in the monomers may be added to the monomers. When using a perfume soluble in the plastic, e.g. bornyl acetate, a depot action is obtained which makes the perfume evaporate slowly.
