Class 38(5) [Also in Group XVI] In a typewriter or like office machine, a switch mechanism coupled to the typewriter carriage, automatically cuts off supply to the typewriter driving motor at a certain time after the last carriage-return movement. The switch mechanism comprises a switch 5 moved into "on" position by a lug 12 on a control rod 8, and moved into "off" position by a lug 11 when the rod is moved rightwardly either by a knob 6 or by a lever 29 which moves slowly anti-clockwise to engage a lug 36 on the rod 8. The lever 29 is frictionally clamped on the end of a shaft 23 which carries an axially slidable sleeve 22 which has a toothed crown 26 for clutching to a similar member 27 driven through reduction gearing 28 from an electric motor 4. The sleeve 22 is pressed by a spring 24 to effect clutching between the toothed members 26, 27 and is moved against the spring by rods 39 and 20 operated from a carriage movement or a starting action respectively. To start the machine the knob 6 is pushed to the left end of a slot 7; this operates the switch 5, and via lever mechanism 16-19 and rod 20, disconnects member 26 so that the lever 29 moves clockwise under force of a spring 33 until a finger 32 thereon is arrested by a bearing bracket 25. The knob 6 now returns to a position 14, leaves the switch 5 "on", but members 26, 27 engage to drive the lever 29 slowly anti-clockwise until it engages the lug 36 to effect a switching-off movement. At each, carriage return movement however, the rod 39 is operated by mechanism 37, 38, 40-42 to disengage the member 26. 27 so that the lever again flies back to the position shown by the force of the spring 33.
