Abstract

773,875. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. April 1, 1954 [May 19, 1953 and Aug. 7, 1953], Nos. 13983/53 and 21857/53. Class 46. A filter unit 9, Fig. 1, consists of a plurality of elements 14, Fig. 6, stacked on a perforate tube 15 between end plates 16, 17 which hold the elements in endwise compression. Each element is formed of two sheets 22, Fig. 2, of resin impregnated paper, each having a circle of spaced dimples, 23, which abut in opposed pairs to space the outer edges of the two sheets, Fig. 6. Radial and circular grooves 24, 25 are also provided. A metallic or fibrous washer 27 is placed between the inner peripheries of the two sheets forming an element and a metallic clamping member 28, having indentations 32 to provide radial channels between adjacent elements, is applied. The endwise compression suffices to form a fluid-tight seal at the outer edges of the sheets of adjacent elements, though these edges may be dipped in adhesive. Oil pressure during filtration also assists sealing. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the outer edges of adjacent sheets are sealed by a metallic clamping member, and the inner edges of the sheets of each element are sealed in contact by a metallic clamping member which, in section on the left of the axis, is like the mirror image of a figure " 5," the upper part of which acts as a clamp and the lower part, provided with recesses, as a washer. In Fig. 10, (not shown) the outer edges of adjacent sheets are sealed by adhesive and the inner edges of the sheets of each element are separated by a washer, while the inner edges of adjacent elements are spaced only by the grooves 24, 25. The tube 15 of Fig. 1, may be replaced by a V-section centralising member, Fig. 11, (not shown), or may be dispensed with, and the elements stacked within a perforate casing (additional to the casing 11, Fig. 1) to the end edges of which the plates 16, 17 are secured by rolling, Fig. 12 (not shown). The elements may be six-sided and relatively located by their apices. The relative sizes of element and casing in a unit of the type of Fig. 1 may be so chosen that the elements are located by the casing, rendering both the tube 15 and the perforate casing of Fig. 12 unnecessary. In Fig. 19 the elements are relatively located by tags 437 bent in from clamping members 438, and again render further locating means unnecessary. In Fig. 21 washers 539 have recessed flanges 540 tapered at 541 to facilitate nesting of adjacent elements. Specification 761,352 is referred to.
