[Also in Group XIV] A wirework utensil or basket comprises two metal circles 10, 11, a first series of U-shaped wires 13 connected at their free ends to one metal circle 10, and a second series of U-shaped wires 14 connected at their free ends to the other circle 11, the two series of U- shaped wires 13, 14 being articulated together. The U -shaped parts may be articulated by tubular members 20 and a metal trellis work 12 forms the bottom of the utensil. The wire may be galvanized or tinned iron wire and it may be coated with plastic or enamel. Two pivoted handles 22 are provided together with an additional assembly of wire elements 21 moving with the handles 22 so as to restrict the opening to the utensil when the handles 22 are brought together and to increase the opening when the handles are moved apart. The utensil can be manipulated into several different shapes and can be folded flat. As shown it can be used as a basket for draining salads and when flat and inverted it may be used as a dish carrier for introducing dishes into a hot oven. It can also be folded so as to act as a stand for fruit, biscuits, or the like. Other uses are as a frying basket, an insert for steamers or as a flower stand.
