Abstract

773,518. Tanks. UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 24, 1954 [Nov. 25, 1953], No. 34105/54. Class 69 (1). A hopper for use in the storage tank of an engine lubricating oil circulation system comprises nested closely spaced apart. inner and outer containers defining an oil flow path between them, the outer container being provided in its base with an inlet communicating with the flow path and the inner container being provided at its base with an outlet which extends through the base of the outer container, and baffle means mounted on the exterior of the outer container defining a channel extending substantially from the top to the bottom of the hopper. In the form shown, the oil tank 25 contains a hopper comprising an outer shell 10, which is connected by an inlet pipe 14 to a valve assembly 27, and an inner shell 34, which is connected by an outlet pipe 15 to the valve assembly. A pair of baffles 16, 17 on the outside of the hopper define an open trough 23, the trough being further defined at its lower end by a bottom plate 21 with upturned portions 22. An inlet 32 from the valve assembly 27 to the tank is carried up the trough 23 and an outlet 33 connects the tank with the valve assembly. Radially-arranged fins 13 are fitted to the bottom of the shell from the opening defined by the plates 21, 22 towards the outlet 33. In operation, when the engine 31 is started, oil is supplied from within the inner shell 34 via the outlet 15, the valve assembly 27 and a pipe 29 to the engine and this oil, heated by the engine, is returned via a pipe 28, the valve assembly 27 and the inlet 14 to the space 35 between the inner and outer shells 34, 10 of the hopper from where it overflows into the inner shell. The hot oil in the space 35 warms the shell 10 and the heat tends to decongeal any congealed oil in the tank touching the shell. This decongealled oil is supplied by the trough 23 to the outlet 33 from the tank. On further running of the engine the valve assembly 27 closes the inlet 14 and the outlet 15 of the hopper and opens the inlet 32 and outlet 33 of the tank which then supplies the engine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 712,085 and 736,335, [Group XXXIV].
