Abstract
773,496. Making cathode heating elements; coiling. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 6, 1954 [Oct. 7, 1953], No. 27488/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for winding under tension a metal filament having a double helical winding on an electrically insulating mandrel includes means for passing an electric current through said winding to heat it to its annealing temperature wherein said electric current is passed through said winding by making electrical contact with said filament at opposite ends of said mandrel. A ceramic mandrel 2 is rotated and moved axially to wind tungsten or molybdenum tungsten wire, guided by tensioning clamps 5, therearound in the form of a double helix. The ends of the wire are then clamped to a baseplate 1 to hold the wire under tension and a glass cover 9 moved over the mandrel to abut the base-plate 1. Nitrogen is then supplied to the enclosure 9 and an electric current is passed through the wire on the mandrel through the base-plate 1 and a probe 7, moved with the cover 9 to contact the end 3 of the mandrel, so that the wire is heated at, e.g., 800‹ C., for a few seconds. After removal from the mandrel 2 the coiled wire is provided with one or more coats of insulating material such as alumina.
