In a machine for attaching hooks and eyes to garments in which prongs on the hook or eye penetrate the garment and after passage through slots in a back plate are clinched over, hooks, or eyes are fed down a shoot 45 to a position below a vertically reciprocating driver 44 which co-operates with an anvil 60 on to which slotted back plates are fed after being severed from a strip thereof supplied by a feed mechanism 65. A hook or eye is held in position below the driver 44 by spring- pressed jaws 47, 48 which are first moved downwards against a spring 50 and then separated by the driver. In a modification, a hook or eye is held by a magnetic inset in the driver. Feed of the hooks and eyes is controlled by an escapement mechanism 46 operated from a plunger 40 carrying the driver 44 through a cam and an arm 131. The back plate feed mechanism 65 is operated from the main shaft 33 by a cam 70 and arm 75 actuating a plate 76 provided with a cam slot 78, the feeding being effected by spring-pressed plungers engaging the slots in the back plates. The severing mechanism 161 is operated by the arm 75. A presser foot 52 carried by a lever arm 53 which is controlled by a foot lever is provided to hold a garment in position on the anvil.
