Abstract

773,272. Casting-machines. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. July 25, 1955 [July 29, 1954], No. 21468/55. Class 83 (1). A molten-metal transfer-trough having a refractory lining 2 and a metal shell 1, comprises means for applying compressive pressure to at least one end of the refractory lining in a direction longitudinally with respect to the trough. Bolts 5 are secured to the shell and pressure is applied by nuts 15 to the lining through a resilient pad 12, e.g. of rubber. Alternatively the pressure is applied through springs. The arrangement permits differential expansion of the lining and shell without fracture of the lining. The outlet-spout 22 is mounted in the lining and is secured to the shell in a manner permitting the spout to move with the lining and relatively to the shell. The spout has a replaceable ceramic orifice 31, e.g. of stabilized zirconia. Between the lining 2 and the shell 1, except in the region of the pouring-spout, is preferably placed an insulation 3, e.g. of magnesia, over which may be placed a layer of aluminium foil. There may be several outlets in the trough.
