Abstract
773,257. Gear-grinding. AEPPLI, A. June 20, 1955, No. 17806/55. Addition to 656,803. Class 83 (3). A method for grinding gear-teeth with two grinding-wheels which are moved axially to produce profile modifications, as in the parent Specification, comprises also displacing the wheels axially independently of each other to crown or round the teeth at each end. A motor 13, Fig. 5, rotates a shaft 15 driving a crank 16 to roll the work 4 through tapes 6. The shaft 15 is connected by a universal-joint 23 to a shaft 15<SP>1</SP> carrying a cam 17 acting through a lever 18 to move the wheel 11 axially to produce root and tip relief. The shaft 15<SP>1</SP> is carried in a bearing 24, which is displaced to produce crowning, by a lever 25 and cam 26 traversed axially with the work 4. A stop 28 nullifies the effect of the cam 26 at the centre-portion of the traverse. In a modification (not shown), the cam 26 is carried on a shaft oscillated by rackgearing on the work-slide 2. In a further modification, Figs. 2 and 7, a cam 42 is rotated similarly to the cam 17 to produce profile modifications, and a cam-slide 47 is reciprocated from rack-gearing 33 on the work-slide 2 to produce rounding through a lever 44. To allow for angular adjustment of a column 7, which carries the wheels 11 on slides 10 each on a slide 9 on a vertically-adjustable slide 8, the drive from the rack 33 is via bevel-gearing 55 on the axis X. In another modification, Fig. 10, the tip-modification is produced from cams 60a rotated, as by the shaft 15, Fig. 5. The cams 60a each rotate a lever 63, a shaft 72 carrying a crank 66, and a bell-crank 67, 68, thus moving the wheel 11 axially. The rounding is produced by rotating a bush 64 (in which the shaft 72 is mounted eccentrically), through a gear 75, a lever 80, cams 78a and a shaft 81 driven from the rack 33, Fig. 2. The tip-relief mechanism is duplicated because one wheel grinds a root and the other a tip. The rounding-mechanism is provided for only one wheel and conveyed through cranks 85, 86 to the other because both wheels operate at the ends of the teeth simultaneously. An adjustable-crank may be introduced between the cams 78a and the wheel 75 to adjust the amount of rounding. The rack 33 may be replaced by tape-mechanism or hydraulic or electrical means.
