Abstract

773,083. Jigging-apparatus. BARRACLOUGH, Ltd., R. W., and BARRACLOUGH, R. W. March 9, 1955 [March 9, 1954], No. 6773/54. Class 94(1). Apparatus for subjecting a container filled with tea or other particulate material to a predetermined number of vibrations or oscillations, comprises a platform 10 fitted with spring clips 11 for securing the container and mounted on a plunger 12 which is movable vertically in a pillar 13 under the action of a cam 16 which causes the platform to rise slowly and then fall suddenly under the action of springs 20. The cam is mounted on a manually-rotatable shaft 14 which carries a gear 22 meshing with a gear 23 carrying a pin 25. A lever 26 pivoted at 28 is urged by a spring (not shown) into an upper position in which a pin 24 thereon prevents movement of the pin 25. The ratio of the gears 22 and 23 is 1 : 6, so that if the lever 26 is depressed manually to allow the cam to be rotated and then released, the cam will automatically be brought to rest after twelve oscillations of the platform when the pins reengage. A boss 33 secured to the underside of the platform is arranged to engage a rubber seating 32 on the top of the pillar to reduce shock. According to the Provisional Specification, the cam may be driven by a motor. The apparatus is used mainly to determine the volume of a given weight of tea, the tea being weighed into a graduated glass container which is then placed on the platform 10 and subjected to twelve oscillations. The volume of the compacted tea can then be read off the graduations.
