Abstract

A dental preparation comprises a polishing agent and a saturated aliphatic acyl sarcoside compound having 17 or 18 carbon atoms in the acyl group, e.g., stearoyl, heptadecanoyl, which may be in the form of a water-soluble salt, e.g. alkali metal ammonium, amine, and the alkylamine such as the mono-, di, or tri-ethanolamine salts. Suitable water-insoluble polishing agents are calcium carbonate, di- and tricalcium phosphate, sodium metaphosphate, aluminium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate and bentonite. The preparation which may take the form of a dental cream, tooth paste or powder, is substantially free from soap, similar higher fatty acid materials, or any inorganic salt which may interfere with the properties of the preparation. The preparation may contain water, glycerine, alcohol, sorbitol, propylene glycol, Irish moss, gum tragacanth, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, starch, saccharin, colouring and flavouring agents, preservatives, stabilizers such as calcium and magnesium suppression agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of pyro, tripolyphosphoric or tetraphosphoric acid such as tetra sodium pyrophosphate, disodium diacid pyrophosphate sodium and potassium tripolyphosphate, hexasodium tetraphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium and potassium metaphosphate, chelating agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and citric acid.
