Abstract
The invention comprises a hemiacetal of chloral with glucose, 3-methyl-glucose or lactose, said hemiacetal containing at least four chloral groups per molecule. Such hermiacetals, which contain 4 or 5 chloral groups per molecule in the case of glucose or 3-methyl glucose and 4 chloral groups in the case of lactose are obtained by heating a mixture of the sugar and the required number of equivalents of chloral under anhydrous conditions at the temperature of reflux of chloral from the mixture until the point of constant reflux rate (i.e. the stage at which reflux is at a minimum) is reached and then cooling the mixture. In Example (1), glucose pentachloral hemiacetal is prepared by refluxing glucose with 5 molecular proportions of chloral at about 120 DEG C. until the point of constant reflux rate is reached. Similarly produced are (2) 3-methyl glucose pentachloral hemiacetal; (3) lactose tetrachloral hemiacetal; (4) glucose tetrachloral hemiacetal.ALSO:A therapeutic sedative and hypnotic composition comprises a carrier and a hemicetal of chloral with glucose, 3 - methyl-glucose or lactose, the hemiacetal containing at least four chloral groups per molecule. The composition may be in the form of capsules, tablets and suppositories with carriers, binders and excipients. The preparation of the hemiacetals is described (see Group IV(b)).
