772,769. Joining carbonaceous pipes. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. March 16, 1955 [March 23, 1954],. No. 7623/55. Class 99(1) The interfitted ends of two carbonaceous pipes are united by means . of a cement between them. By the term "carbonaceous pipe or tube" is meant a pipe or tube composed entirely or for the most part of carbon or graphite. The pipe ends can be rounded and a a clearance formed between them as shown in Fig. 5 or a clearance e Fig. 7 can be provided by removing material from either pipe end. The length of the tapered' surface of the interfitting ends may befrom # to # in. for a pipe having an inside. diameter of 1.156 ins. The cement hardening can be accelerated by incorporating an acid catalyst in the cement. One such. cement may comprise:-Finely divided carbon 30 parts by weight, phenolie aldehyde type resin 100 parts by weight and hypophosphorous acid catalyst 1 part by weight. Fig. 8 indicates the strength of - various joints with varying taper of the pipe ends. The pipes may be resin impregnated carbonaceous pipes.
