Abstract
772,569. Eye surgery. STONE, Dr. W. May 10, 1955, No. 13487/55. Class 81(2) A corneal implant, for replacing the part of the cornea in front of the lens, comprises a transparent synthetic resin disc, of concavo-convex form, having a multiplicity of recesses around its margin into which the surrounding tissues can grow, to retain it. An outer layer of the cornea, 20, Fig. 5, is cut and folded back so that the implant 24 can be inserted against the remaining layer 21, after which the layer 20 is replaced and sutured at 23. After the tissues 22 have grown into perforations 27 around the implant and firmly secured it, the central parts of the cornea are cut away to expose the clear central part of the implant. The implant is provided with a central part which projects to form a step 26 around which the cornea is cut, so as ultimately to form a smooth outer surface. In a modification, such a central part is fitted subsequently to a recess in the outer face of the implant. It is also proposed that the peripheral part of the implant should carry a wire mesh instead of being provided with holes.
