Abstract

772,316. Automatic control systems for aircraft. COLLINS RADIO CO. March 15,1955 [May 28, 1954], No. 7586/55. Class 38 (4). In a system for maintaining constant airspeed of an aircraft a servomotor operating the throttle of a propelling motor is electrically controlled by a signal dependent on airspeed error and by a signal, dependent on pitch attitude, the magnitude of which is adjusted in accordance with the airspeed selected. As shown, a variable inductive device 30 associated with an airspeed responsive bellows 31 develops a signal which is applied through another variable inductive device 37, a mixer 24, and an amplifier 22 to control a servomotor 16 adjusting a throttle 10. A potentiometer 18 coupled to the throttle provides a follow-up control signal. An integrator 42 introduces an integral component of control. A signal dependent on pitch attitude is developed by a variable inductive device 47 associated with a gyro vertical 43 and is applied through another variable inductive device 51 and a potentiometer 57 to control the servo-. motor. The desired airspeed is obtained by adjusting inductive device 37 by a knob 41 which also adjusts inductive device 51 and potentiometer 57 so that the pitch responsive control signal is suited to the airspeed. Potentiometers 18 and 57 may be graded to give desired characteristic response.
