In abrasion testing for wear resistance of cast-metal articles a sample for testing is taken from the face subject to wear in the finished article at right angles to that face by means of a socket-drill. For example, in testing a cylinder lining, a sample core about 3 mm. in diameter is taken from the upper part of the lining just above the point reached by the upper piston. ring at the top of its stroke. The sample is subjected to any finishing treatment to which the whole is to be subjected and tested in a known machine using lubricants treated to resemble those found in the working engine.
