Abstract

A composition, suitable as a crankcase lubricant in spark ignition internal combustion engines, comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an iron, nickel, cobalt or copper derivative of a compound of formula HOCR:CR1.CH:NR11, OCR.CHR1.CH:NR11 or OCR.CR1:CH.NHR11 wherein R and R1 are each a hydrogen atom or an organic radicle or together form an organic ring structure, and R11 is an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl group, which may carry substituents. The lubricating oil may be a mineral or synthetic oil, a blend of mineral oil with a fatty oil (e.g. castor or lard oil), or a blend of a synthetic oil with mineral oil and/or a fatty oil. Synthetic lubricating oils mentioned are polymerized olefins, alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons, esters (such as the dialkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, e.g. di(2 - ethylhexyl)sebacate or adipate, and the alkyl or alkaryl esters of inorganic acids, e.g. trioctyl or tricresyl phosphate and tetraoctyl silicate), polymers or copolymers of alkylene glycols and the esters and ethers of such polymers and copolymers, and polyorganosiloxanes. Substituents which may be present in group R11, or radicles R and R1, of the above formulae are halogen atoms and cyano, hydroxy, alkoxy, acyl, amino, substituted amino, mercapto, thioether and carbalkoxy groups. Suitable metal derivatives of compounds of the above formulae are iron, nickel, cobalt or copper derivatives of methyl amino methylene acetone, ethyl amino methylene acetone, allyl amino methylene acetone, methyl amino methylene acetaldehyde, ethyl amino methylene acetaldehyde, methyl amino methylene propionaldehyde, allyl amino methylene pinacoline, methyl amino methylene pentanone2, allyl amino methylene methyl neopentyl ketone and allyl amino methylene acetophenone. Derivatives of iron, nickel, cobalt or copper partly with compounds of the above formulae and partly with other organic compounds, such as alcohols, phenols and mercaptans, may also be employed. The ethylate of the copper derivative of methyl amino methylene pinacoline having the formula <FORM:0772029/III/1> is mentioned as an example of such derivatives. The composition may also contain additional ingredients such as oxidation inhibitors, bearing corrosion inhibitors, detergents, dispersants, pour point depressants, viscosity index improvers, antifoaming agents, rusting inhibitors, oiliness agents, extreme pressure additives and dyes. The detergents may be metal or organic base (e.g. amine or quaternary ammonium base) salts of such acids as fatty acids, chlorinated fatty acids, naphthenic acids, rosin acids, aromatic carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, sulphuric acid monoesters, phosphoric, arsenic and antimonic acid mono- and di-esters, including the corresponding thio acid esters, and esters of phosphonic and arsonic acids. In particular, suitable detergents are basic salts of alkaline earth metals with naphthenic acids, naphthasulphonic acids, alkylated salicyclic acids and partial esters of acids of phosphorus. Phosphatides, polyvalent metal salts of alkyl phenolaldehyde condensation products, rapeseed oil and voltolized fatty or mineral oils may also be employed as detergents. Phenols, amino-phenols and amines, suitable as oxidation inhibitors are listed. Suitable rust inhibitors are dicarboxylic acids, metal sulphonates and acidic organic compounds containing a nitrile, nitro or nitroso group such as alpha-cyanostearic acid. Extreme pressure agents mentioned are chlorinated paraffin wax, esters of phosphorus or thio-phosphorus acids, aryl or phenol sulphides or polysulphides, sulphurized fatty oils, sulphurized esters, sulphurized olefins, phosphosulphurized fatty oils or acids and phosphorus acid esters containing sulphurized organic radicles. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing copper ethyl amino methylene acetone (with or without basic calcium alkyl salicylates in which the alkyl groups contain 14-18 carbon atoms) or cobalt ethyl amino methylene acetone.
