Abstract

771,868. Ball joints. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 2, 1955 [Sept. 24, 1954], No. 25266/55. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXXII] In a vehicle suspension system comprising upper and lower wheel supporting links (see Group XXXII], the upper link 2 is connected to a steering knuckle support by a ball-joint 74, Fig. 6, which comprises a flanged cup 82 for a spherical head 84 for stud 86, by which the joint is attached to the knuckle support. A non- metallic liner 90 is located between the head 84 and the cup 82 and an insert 92 loaded by a resilient ring 96 is located between the head and a cup 98. A resilient grease seal 108 is provided with a stiffening insert 116 and with a nylon bush 114 bonded to the seal and engaging the stud 86. The lower link is connected to the support by a joint 78, Fig. 7, which comprises a head 128 located between upper and lower members 124, 126 with the interposition of a non-metallic liner 132 bonded to member 124. The joint is connected to the knuckle support through a stud 134. A grease seal 137 is similar to that for the joint 74. In another form, Fig. 8, the joint 74 comprises flanged cups 138, 140 housing a head 144, a liner 142 and a spring- loaded retainer 152 bearing on the head with the interposition of a second liner 150.
