Abstract

771,761. Making bags. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. June 8; 1955 [March 9, 1954], No. 6838/54. Class 94(2). A method of making bags consisting of two separate walls secured by adhesive and having a double thickness closure flap comprises making the mouth slit in one bag wall before applying it to the other, adhesive having been previously applied to unite all four side edges of the bag and form above the slit, the closure flap. The method may be used to make bags as described with reference to Figs. 1-7a of Specification 754,449. In producing the bags as shown in Fig. 4 of that Specification a web 10 has the edge-joining adhesive areas applied by means 12, and a cutter 16 forms the slits 17. A second web 18 is applied to the web 10 by rolls 20 and the combined webs pass through folding means 22, rendered inoperative, to an adhesive applicator 23 applying stripes 24, 25 to the web 10, through notching means 26 for removing sectors at each end of the transverse adhesive areas to shape the top and bottom closure flaps, and through folding means 28 which double over the longitudinal edges of the webs onto the stripes 24, 25 to produce the side seams. An applicator 30 applies areas 31 of self-sealing adhesive to the closure flap and adjacent bag wall, and the webs pass through a dryer 32 to a cutter 35 which separates the bags. An adhesive stripe 38 is applied by an applicator 36, and the bottom closure flap 37 folded onto it by means 39. The completed bags are conveyed to stacking means 9. In forming a further type of bag, Fig. 2, the apparatus is modified in that the means 22 are rendered operative to fold the edges of the wider web 10 over those of the narrower web 18, and the devices 23, 26, 28 are rendered inoperative. One web, preferably 18, may be transparent and the other opaque or semi-opaque. The web 10 may be slit into bag lengths before being applied to the web 18 or may be replaced by a stack of separate bag blanks. If the material of the web 10 is resistant to the application of' self-sealing adhesive, a preliminary coating of gum may be applied by means 5 and dried by a dryer 6 prior to the application of the adhesive areas 31.
