Abstract

A water-miscible solid product in tablet, pellet, sheet, stick, or powder form, convertible into a jelly, cream or lotion by the addition of hot water is produced by saponifying a soap-forming acid, e.g. higher fatty, resin or napthenic acid, with a hydroxide of an alkali metal or of an organic base, in the presence of up to 10 per cent by weight of the mixture of a non-soap-forming organic acid, e.g. citric or acetic acid, incorporating a wax before or after saponification, heating to remove water and allowing the product to solidify on cooling. Additional surface tension decreasing agents, e.g. alcohols or phenols and glycerol, is or are incorporated prior to the solidification of the mixture, e.g. in the initial mixture but if the agent is volatile it is added after the cooling of the saponified mixture. Medicaments, scents, preservatives, emollients, colouring materials, or mixtures thereof may be incorporated in the mixture after saponification but prior to solidification.
