Abstract

771,403. Winding wire. DETROIT COIL CO. May 6, 1955 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 13162/55. Class 120 (2). A coil winding machine comprises in combination, a rotatable bobbin support, a wire guide movable longitudinally of the support to guide wire on to a bobbin mounted upon and rotatable with the support, a fluid pressure actuator coupled with the guide to move the same, a variable delivery pump coupled with the support to be driven thereby, a closed fluid pressure circuit communicatively coupling the actuator and pump, an electrically responsive reversing valve disposed in the fluid circuit and adapted to direct fluid pressure to the actuator to reverse its direction of movement, and electric limit switch means electrically connected to the valve and responsive to determined movements of the wire guide to energize the valve. As shown, a bobbin 22 to be wound with wire 20 is supported upon a metal insert 28 upon a non-circular spindle 68, 78, and is clamped in position thereon between plates 82, 84, by a nut 86 on the screwed end 80 of the spindle. The spindle is driven by an electric motor 52 through a pulley 108 and belt 106, the belt running over a pulley 122 carried by a spring-urged arm 120 rotatable about the axis of the spindle 68 and movable by a pedal 126 to contact with, or slip upon, a pulley 104 which drives the spindle 68. The spindle 68, through a sprocket chain 92, drives the shaft 228 of a positive displacement pump 60 whose output may be varied by a handle 260. The pump 60 delivers fluid to a cylinder 56 to reciprocate a piston 148 carried by a rod 146, the entry and discharge of fluid to and from the cylinder 56 being governed by a solenoid-controlled valve 154, the valve solenoids 170, 172 being energized, alternately, to actuate the reversing valve, by the contact of an arm 193 on the reciprocating rod 146 with adjustable limit switches 174, 176. The wire is guided to the bobbin 22 over a traverse guide comprising two grooved pulleys 132, 130 on an arm 134 adjustably carried by an arm 138 on the rod 146. The pump 60 comprises an adjustable swash-plate 244 and a rotary block 226 splined at 230 to the driven shaft 228. The block 226 contains piston rods 232 and supplies fluid to a closed piping system including the cylinder 56, by way of the reversing valve 154. A rotary gear-pump 248 driven from the shaft 228 and supplied with fluid through the pipe 249 from the pump reservoir 222, is fitted to furnish a pressure to the intake side of the pump by way of check valves 252, 256, which allow passage of fluid only towards the block 226. A check valve 254 permits leakage of fluid back into the line 249. The electric control system of the machine comprises a main switch 196 and a solenoid 202 which controls a spring-loaded switch 206, the limit switch 176 being normally closed. When the wire guide moves towards the left, Fig. 1, the normally open limit switch 174 is closed by the arm 193. This energizes the solenoid 202 and moves the switch 206 to contact A. At the same time, the solenoid 170 is energized to move the reversing valve 154 to admit fluid under pressure through pipes 162, 164 to the left-hand side of the cylinder 56 and apply suction to the right-hand side through pipes 168, 166. The rod 146 then moves to the right and the switch 174 is opened. But, because the switch 206 contacts A, the solenoid 202 is still energized through the line 204 ; and these conditions apply until switch 176 is opened by the arm 193 at the right-hand end of its travel, when the switch 202 moves to contact B. This sequence of operations is then repeated until the coil is completed. The speed of movement of the wire guide may be varied by adjusting the angle of the swash-plate 244.
