Abstract

771,292. Brush-gear for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 31, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954], No. 24998/55. Class 35. A brush-holder 1 is attached by studs 3 to an insulated support member 2 which is in turn mounted on the frame 12 of a dynamo-electric machine. When the commutator diameter has been reduced by wear or by machining, the brush-holder can be adjusted towards the commutator by removing bolts 9, 10, aligning apertures 4, 4a and 6, 6a and reinserting the bolts in newly aligned apertures 5, 5a, and 7, 7a, the spacing between the apertures in the support (in the direction of brush adjustment) being less than the spacing in the frame by an amount smaller than the diameter of a larger aperture. The apertures 4, 5 have a close fit on the bolt 9 whilst the apertures 6, 7 are looser on the bolt 10 to allow for manufacturing tolerances, the close-fit apertures being arranged as close to the brush holder and to the commutator as possible. A coil spring 21 for biasing the brush into engagement with the commutator is mounted on a pin 20 carried by the support 2, the pin having a square crosssection and being received in a circular hole 22 for providing a firm and accurate location of the pin. To increase the rigidity, the pin has an internally threaded transverse hole into which a bolt or screw 19, accommodated in the support member 2, is screwed so that the upper corners of the pin are pressed firmly against the inside surface of the hole. The brushholder may be formed by extrusion, a slot 26 being added to accommodate the spring 21 when the brush has worn.
