Abstract

771,233. Making pipes; welding by fusion. WRIGHT & CO., Ltd., J. S. Feb. 9, 1953 [Feb. 9, 1952], No. 3465/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A metal pipe 1, preferably a cast-iron waste water and/or soil disposal pipe, has one or more bosses 2, 3, 4 secured thereto by boring a hole in the pipe for each boss and then welding the boss in the hole. The bosses 2, 4 are tapped and the boss 3 has a spigot end 3a for receiving a waste discharge pipe 5. The bosses each have a flange 1d, 7, spaced from their inner ends so as to leave a spigot end for closely engaging within the relevant hole and to be flush with the inside of the pipe. The bores of the bosses are outwardly flared at their inner ends. The pipe 1 may be in a single length or in a number of lengths la, 1b, 1c secured together by welded spigot and socket joints. A welding substance is inserted between each flange 1d, 7 and the pipe and also in the spigot and socket joints and the whole assembly is then heated in a muffle furnace. The latter has a roof of which portions may be removed adjacent the joints to be welded so that a flame can be applied locally to the joints to melt the welding substance and thus weld the joints.
