Classes 20(3) and 137 A windscreen of the kind having a viewing slit at eye level to enable the driver to have clear vision under all conditions. comprises a convex screen 1 as viewed from the front, made e.g. of transparent plastic and having 'a central viewing aperture 3 and a central concave depression 2 which is wider at the bottom than at the top and has its maximum depth at the lower edge of the aperture 3. The depression 2 guides the incident air, see arrows 4, upwards across the aperture 3 substantially in the plane of the screen, and along the inside of the upper rearwardly curved part 5 of the screen to mix with air flowing over the top rof the screen with the minimum of eddies. The provision of the depression 2 reduces the air flow round the sides of the screen and also gives the screen additional rigidity, however, if further rigidity is required corrugatons (such as 6) may be provided adjacent the edges of the screen, alternatively the edges may be folded back and welded to form a hollow beaded edge. A further form of stiffening comprises a tube 7 of metal, or plastic, which is slit down one side to fit over an edge of the screen where it is retained by cementing, or by welding. The windscreen may be formed as a single piece, or as shown, the upper part 5 may be separate and joined to the lower part by removable fixing means 8. In another form the upper and lower parts are joined by rubber strips of bobbin section. For a closed motor car the aperture 3 is preferably closable by means of a hinged or removable section, the air being guided rearwards adjacent the inside of the roof to escape through a ventilator at the rear of the passenger compartment.
