Abstract

771,072. Making, filling and closing containers. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES., F. Dec. 23, 1954 [Dec. 28, 1953], No. 37178/54. Classes 18 and 94(1). The machine makes paper or cardboard containers by folding blanks around travelling formers and feeds them to filling and closing mechanism, the various operations being effected while the blanks or containers are moving continuously through the machine at a constant rate. Paper passes from a roll 2 through gumming and feed rollers 3, 5 and 6 and is severed by a knife 7 into blanks Z which are fed forwardly by cooperating endless bands 8, 9, the latter carrying transverse spacing-bars 10 which align the blanks with horizontal formers 11 carried by an endless chain 36 passing over sprockets 14, 15. As each blank approaches the exit from the belts, it is held against the under-surface of a former by a mechanical gripper or suction applied through orifices in the former, and as the former moves around the sprocket 14 the sides of the blank are folded upwardly by one of a series of devices 16 mounted for vertical movement on a drum 37 rotatable with the sprocket. Each device 16 comprises a spring- loaded horizontal plate 38 and vertical side plates and is moved upwardly to effect the folding by a fixed cam ring 17 engaging a roller 18 thereon. The upstanding rear portion of the blank is then folded on to the upper surface of the former by a member 19 which is carried by a rotatable spindle 21 mounted for swinging movement on a central vertical shaft 20, and the forward portion is folded down by a fixed plate 22. The bottom of the sleeve thus formed is finally closed in known manner by oscillating and fixed folders 23, 24. As the formers 11 pass around the sprocket 15, they move into alignment with holders 26 carried by an endless conveyer 25. The holders are normally positioned vertically on the conveyer, but as each holder is aligned with a former, it is swung to a horizontal position and the container P carried by the former is transferred to the holder by means of compressed air supplied through ducts in the end of the former. The holder then resumes its vertical position and carries the container beneath a rotary filling device 29 of known construction and to folding-mechanism, also of known construction, which closes its mouth. The filled and closed containers are ejected downwardly from the holders on to a plate 30 rotating with the conveyer sprocket 28, and are then transferred by a guide 31 to a rotary conveyer 32 which carries them under spring-loaded plates (not shown) which secure the closure folds. The completed packages are finally discharged by a guide 33. In modifications, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), the rotary conveyer 32 is replaced by an endless belt and the formers 11 are positioned vertically on the conveyer 36, the containers being transferred upwardly or downwardly into holders carried by an endless conveyer located above or below the conveyer 36. In the former case, the holders are temporarily inverted for the reception of the containers.
