Abstract
770,657. Fishing reels. WHIPP, F. E., [representative of WHIPP, I. T. L.]. April 28, 1955 [March 22, 1954], No. 8230/54. No. 48 [Also in Group XXIV] A winding gear for a fishing reel embodies a manually rotatable friction clutch part 11 adapted to engage a second friction clutch part 7 and having a screw thread engagement with an axially fixed element 12 such that rotation of the first friction clutch part 11 in the winding direction causes it to advance axially into engagement with the second clutch part 7 as a result of resistance to rotation applied to the element 12, which resistance is greater in the unwinding than in the winding direction and is provided by the engagement with the element 12 of the convolutions of a spiral spring 14 anchored at one end 15. The first clutch part 11 is formed integrally with a driving shaft 10 and is conically bored to receive the second clutch part 7 which is conical and is secured to the reel spindle 6 by a pin 8 engaged in an open-ended slot 9 in the spindle. The element 12 surrounds the first clutch part 11 and is rotatable in an outer cylindrical casing 1 secured to a reel plate 4. The spiral spring 14 is located in an annular recess 13 in the casing 1. Rotation of the element 12 in the unwinding direction tightens the convolutions of the spring 14 around the element to lock it against rotation whereas rotation of the element in the winding direction unwraps the convolutions so that they give only slight resistance to rotation of the element. A light spring may be interposed between the two clutch parts 7, 11.
