Abstract
770,312. Preparing carbonated beverages. MEYER LIQUID, Ltd., [formerly LIQUID CARBONIC CO., Ltd.]. June 6, 1955 [June 25, 1954], No. 18713/54. Class 14(1) Non-alcoholic carbonated beverage is prepared by mixing water and syrup at about normal temperature, subjecting the mixture to carbonating and chilling operations 'under pressure and then allowing the mixture to settle under a lower pressure which is so regulated that it is sufficient to keep a specified degree of carbonation in the liquid. The mixture is supplied at normal temperature to a high pressure tank 1 from a mixing device as described in Specification 759,424 [Group II] and enters through an inlet 2 via a non-return valve 3. A pipe 5 delivers the mixture over the exterior surface of a carbonating cylinder 4 of porous ceramic material, carbon dioxide gas being supplied to the cylinder 4 from a pipe 7, regulating valve 8 and pipe 9. The main effect of the carbonating cylinder 4 is to release air from the mixture, which air is exhausted by a snift valve 10. The cylinder 4 rests upon a strainer 11 through which the mixture. passes to a pipe 12 and is then driven by a centrifugal pump 13 to the main carbonator 16, which by means of a restricted inlet and baffle means causes turbulence of the mixture during passage therethrough, carbon dioxide gas under pressure being admitted to the lower end of the device 16 from a pipe 17. The carbonated mixture then passes to a heat exchanger 19 for chilling so than any free carbon dioxide is absorbed by the mixture. The outlet 22 from the heat exchanger 19 has two branches, one 23 leaking through a non-return valve 24 to a second inlet 25 to the tank 1 so that the mixture can be re-circulated through the carbonating and chilling processes, the other branch 26 leading through a valve 27 and a pressure reducing valve 28 to a low pressure or beverage accumulating tank 29. The reducing valve 28 is regulated by a diaphragm in a casing 31 which is pneumatically actuated under the control of a valve 32 actuated by a float 33. Compressed air is supplied from the snift valve 10 by a pipe 34 leading to the valve 32 and by a pipe 35 leading from the valve 32 to the diaphragm casing 31. A predetermined level of carbonated liquid is thus maintained in the tank 29, the pressure in the tank 29 being kept at a lower level sufficient to retain the carbon dioxide in the mixturfe. For the preparation of less highly carbonated beverages, the tank 1 may be omitted and the mixture delivered directly under pressure to the carbonator 16, in which case there is no recirculation of the mixture. Specification 769,330 [Group XVII] also is referred to.
