Abstract

769,755. Batteries. SOC. EREC. SOC. D'ETUDES DE REALISATIONS ET D'EXPLOITATIONS COMMERCIALES. May 4, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 13937/55. Class 53. A battery filling device has a number of filling passages, one for each cell for the admission of electrolyte, each passage being so formed that the cross-sectional area at the delivery side is greater than that at the admission side. Fig. 1 shows a battery having cells 2 arranged to be filled by a liquid stored in a reservoir 3 through passages passing through a partition 4. Each passage consists of ducts 5, 6 so formed that the entry duct 5 has a smaller cross-sectional area than that of the delivery duct 6 so that, as the closing member 7 is withdrawn, the liquid flowing through the passages does not touch at least one side of the duct 6. The widened exit duct of each passage may consist of a duct progressively increasing in cross section, or have a flared or splayed form towards the outlet, or it may be laterally displaced with reference to the narrow duct 5. In all cases, the dimension of the ducts 5 is such that when the cells are full the electrolyte will not flow back the passages owing to capillarity.
