[Also in Group XX] A gyro-magnetic compass comprises a free directional gyroscope 10, a synchro-transmitter 28 with a rotatable stator 31 and a rotor 27 mechanically connected with gyroscope 10 and connected to an electric power supply, a pair of synchros 42, 72 the stators of which are connected to the stator of the synchro-transmitter, and an indicating means 78 connected to the rotor 74 of synchro 72 is characterized in that a free magnetic compass element 38 is mechanically connected to the rotor 41 of the synchro 42, and a driving means controlled electrically by the voltage in the rotor 41 is mechanically connected to rotate the stator 31 of the synchro-transmitter so that the rapid fluctuations inherent in the magnetic compass element are not followed, but that the drift of the free gyroscope is corrected. The electrically-driven rotor 18 is mounted in the craft in gimbals 15, 11, and its spin axis is maintained substantially horizontal in known manner. The outer gimbal 11 is geared to the rotor 27 of the synchrotransmitter 28. The output of the rotor 41 of the servo-resolver 42 is fed to a servo-amplifier 47 connected to a motor 48, which drives the stator 31 of the synchro-transmitter through a gear train which includes a two-speed gear-box 58 controlled by a relay 66. The synchro resolver 72 controls the position of the pointer 78, which indicates the heading of the craft. In operation, the gyroscope rotor is started up and erected. The gear-box 58 is in high-speed position so that stator 31 of the synchrotransmitter is quickly adjusted by the errorsignal induced between its windings and those of the stator of servo-resolver 42 and applied to the servo-amplier 47. The gear-box is then shifted to its low-speed position. Thereafter the error signal keeps the stator 31 in step with the average position of the magnetic element 38. Low-frequency oscillations of the gyroscope are integrated by the tracking of motor 48, and high-frequency oscillations of the magnetic element are integrated by the high gear ratio.
