Abstract

769,429. Washing granular material. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. Sept. 1, 1954 [Sept. 1, 1953], No. 24159/53. Class 82(2) Apparatus for cleaning granular material comprises a separating vessel with a conduit for admitting liquid at the bottom, an overflow for liquid and solids, a conduit admitting liquid at a level intermediate the overflow and the bottom, means for feeding granular material, with or without liquid, at a level above the intermediate level, and means whereby, when the pressure head of liquid admitted at the bottom exceeds a predetermined value, some or all of this liquid is diverted and admitted to the vessel at the intermediate level. As shown, applied to the cleaning of coal, a separating vessel comprises a lower conical chamber 1, an upper conical chamber 1A and a feed pipe 2A for coal slurry connected to a conical chamber 2 below the chamber 1A. Water is supplied to the chamber 1 through a pipe 4A and a spigot 7C in a chamber 4 and also through a pipe 3A arranged at a higher level in the chamber 1. The pipes 3A and 4A are connected to head boxes 3C and 4C respectively, the head boxes being connected by a weir 5. The water supply at 3A and 4A may be made to pulsate by air pressure through pipes 3D and 4D. In operation a quicksand of fine refuse is formed in the spigot 7C and as density of this quicksand increases the pressure head in the headbox 4C also increases until water in the box 4C overflows the weir 5 and is supplied to the vessel through the pipe 3C. Some of the quicksand flows through the spigot 7C and is discharged and conditions in the spigot return to the earlier state: A constant height of quicksand is thereby maintained. The coal slurry may be fed into the vessel tangentially to produce a swirl in the vessel, and pulsations may also be applied to the liquid in the vessel. The invention may also be applied to Chance washers Fig. 5 (not shown) and the Menzies washers Fig. 4 (not shown).
