[Also in Group XIV] A mechanism is provided for clinching hook-like projections or clips 2 of tie wires 3 to end convolutions of furniture springs 1 for a mattress spring interior (Fig. 11), a jaw of the clinching mechanism actuating the removal of the clinched work and the positioning of the unclinched work. The preliminary assembly is by hand or mechanically as in Specification 769,295. The work is fed along a table to upper and lower rows of clinching mechanisms 5 and 6 for simultaneous clinching of the upper and lower springs and tie wires whence it is fed on to a table 7. In Fig. 2, a single clinching mechanism, a fixed jaw 8 and a reciprocating jaw 9 affects the clinching, said jaw 9 being carried on a horizontal bar 13 which slides by a slide plate 15 screwed to its flat base 14 in a pair of horizontal channels 17 in a parallel pair of side plates 18 bolted (19) to end blocks 20, 21, block 20 being a rectangular angle member, a flanged upper part 20a mating with the channel 17 ; its horizontal limb receives the bolts 19. A screw 22, passing through the vertical limb of the block 20 carries a U- notched block 23 which, together with the U- notched block 21, clamps the mechanism to a cross-beam of the apparatus. The side plate, 18 are screwed to a bar 28 supporting the fixed jaw 8, detachably secured by a part sitting in a step in the bar 28. The jaw 9 is also detachably secured, in a step 11 of the bar 13. In operation, the jaw 9 moves forward to clinch the spring convolutions and tie wires between it and a part 8b of the jaw 8. A L-shaped trigger member 32, the horizontal limb of which rides on the top of the bar 13, has two ribs on its vertical limb 32b disposed on opposite sides of the part 8b. Member 32 pivots on a pin 37 passing through the side walls 18. After the clinching operation, the jaw 9 moves away from jaw 8 to a distance greater than the diameter of a spring convolution, and a vertically reciprocating ejector bar 33, standing up from a rectangular U-shaped saddle part 33a straddling the bar 13 and having pins 34 engaging in side channels 35 of the bar 13, is moved, because of its engagement in the channels 35, upward, to push the limb 32b vertical which disengages and pushes the clinched work on so the top of the ejector 33 which carries it upward whence it is carried forward off the ejector 33 due to the jaw 9 carrying unclinched work forward. A simplified modification of this mechanism is disclosed in the Provisional Specification. The bars 13 carry hooks 39 for connection to common cross-rods 40, one upper and one lower; a flywheel 41, carried in a machine frame 42, actuating the rods 40, is connected by a crank, a connecting rod 44 and a link 45 to a pair of side plates 46 across which the rods 40 are fixed, the drive being duplicated if desired on the opposite side of the machine. Alternatively, an hydraulic ram can actuate the side plates 46 and be controlled by a foot pedal operated valve or a valve operated automatically in synchronism with mechanical means which feed the lines of springs in succession into the clinching mechanisms.
