A garbage receptacle intended to be partially buried in a pit 17 in the ground comprises an upper frusto-conical portion 16 mounted end to end on a cylindrical portion 14 open at both ends, there being removable means 24 for securing and sealing the portions together, and a hinged sealing cover 28. The surfaces of the portions 14, 16 may be covered with resistant tar, bitumen or asphaltic compositions 12, part 14 being also provided at both ends with an outwardly turned rounded flange 18, Fig. 3, and part 16 with an outturned flange 20 at its lower end conforming to the upper contour of flange 18. A gasket 22, U-sectioned tension member 24 with flanges 25, and a bolt part 26 serve to secure part 16 to part 14 in air- and watertight relationship. Similar means may be used for adding additional section(s) 14, a member 24 wide enough to encompass two abutting flanges 18 then being necessary. The cover 28 is hinged by member 34 and pivot 40 to bracket 42 slotted at 52, so that the cover may remain in either open or closed position ; and when closed the cover 28 bears against a tubular gasket 74 on the out-turned flange 76 to seal the portion 16. A latch member 58 pivoted to the cover at 60 co-operates with a member 62 having a slot 72 for reception of a closure pin. Decomposition of foodstuffs placed in the receptacle may be initiated or its rate increased by addition of a culture of yeast, mould and bacteria. The moisture content should be maintained at about 3 to 35 percent of the total foodstuffs. Bacteria which may be added include B. mycoides, B. megatherium, clostridium pastorianum, and thermophilics such as B. ludwigii ; though many of the aerobic, anaerobic and facultative anaerobe categories may be employed.
