Abstract
769,104. Injection-moulding. TUBE TURNS PLASTICS, Inc. July 26, 1954, No. 21742/54. Class 87(2). The temperature of portions of heat-plasticizable organic plastic material that are being fed successively to the injection cylinder of an injection-moulding machine is raised to the desired level by two operations, viz. (1) heat is applied continuously at a constant temperature from an external source this heat being insufficient to impart the desired plasticity to the material, and (2) further heat is applied to the material intermittently, by mechanical working of the material, this further increment of heat raising the material to the desired temperature. The intermittent mechanical working of the material occurs in sequence with the operation of the injection-moulding machine. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for carrying out the two heating operations, comprising a hopper 13 which feeds raw material to a chamber 10, heaters 12 which constitute the external source of heat, and an intermittently-rotated screw 11 which heats the material by mechanical working and feeds it to the injection-moulding machine. Fig. 3 shows apparatus having a modified screw comprising parts A, B and C. In an example describing the feeding of polystyrene having a moulding range of 400‹- 525‹F. by means of the Fig. 3 apparatus, the heaters 12 are set at 350‹F. At the discharge end of section A the polystyrene is at 325‹F., and passing through section C it is at 430‹F. The screw is stopped for 30-second periods during the operation of the injection ram, Fig. 2, (not shown). Specifications 684,582 and 711,875 are referred to.
