A fare box is adapted to receive both tickets and coins and has separate inspection areas for the coins and the tickets with means for separating the tickets and coins and for depositing them in their respective areas. The tickets and coins are inserted through a slot 17, Fig. 4, in a transparent fare hopper 12 and fall down a transversely convex slideway 18 on to a second slideway 27, Fig. 3, similarly convex, and thence on to a plate 24 provided with a nylon mat 29 on which tickets are retained, the coins rolling down to enter a narrow space 30 between the section 25 and the cover-plate 26 and via an inclined track 31 on to a track 32 to line up vertically on a rail 34 and rightangled track 36. The track 36 is supported on a lever 37 pivotally mounted at 39 and bearing at its other end a weight 41 so that on the accumulation of sufficient coins the lever 37 swings to drop the coins through passage 42 into the fare collection box. The cover-plate 26 adjacent the ticket-holding area 24 and the coin-holding area 30 is transparent to permit inspection. The section 24, 25 comprising the back supports of these inspection areas is pivoted at 64 and may be moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 by elevation or depression of a U-shaped bar 45 pivotally connected to a lever 52 having at its outer end a roller 61 bearing against a plate 62 secured to the section 24. A cam surface 59, 60, 60a on the pivot 47 co-operates with stops 56, 57 and the U-shaped bar may thereby be latched in the upper position. The pivotal movement of the section 24, 25 ejects the tickets and coins into the fare collection box. Means locking the cover 26 to the housing, and means locking the collection box in position may be provided, such locking means being rendered inaccessible unless the U-shaped bar 45 is in its upper position and therefore the inspection areas emptied of coins and tickets.
