Abstract
An antibacterial substance is prepared by subjecting comminuted plant material of plants of the Cruciferae and Tropaeolaceae families to the action of water in the presence of an enzyme especially myrosin, which is capable of splitting up glycerides present in said plant material and which is present in the plant or is added thereto, for not more than two hours, adding a preservative such as benzoic acid to inhibit the enzyme, and extracting the fermented mixture with a mineral oil, an animal or vegetable oil or fat, or an organic solvent for fats. The separated extract is used medicinally as such or when incorporated into soaps and pharmaceutical carriers including ointments. It is preferred to carry out the aqueous fermentation in closed vessels to prevent loss of volatile oil. Examples describe the extraction of the fermented mash of (a) Tropaeolum majus (Indian cress) with liquid paraffin (b) Cochlearia armoracia (horse radish) with peanut oil and (c) Lepidium sativum (garden cress) with sperm oil. Other plants which may be used are: Brassica oleracea var capritata (cabbage), B. oleacea var. botrytis (cauliflower), B. oleacaea subvar gemnifera (Brussel sprouts), B. rapa, B. napus, B. oleracea subvar. sabauda, B. nigra, Raphanus sativus niger, R. sativus var. radicula, Sinapis alba, Alyssum, Arabis alpina, aubrietia alpina, aubrietia alfina, Aubrutia bougainvillea, Cherianthus allionii, Cochlearia officinalis, Hesperis matronalis, Iberis amara, Runaria biennis and Nasturtium officinalis.
