Classes 97(1) and 98(1) A film carrier for use in a projector viewer or enlarger, comprises a gate consisting of two separate elements, a movable guide member on at least one side of the gate which is connected to at least one element of the gate so that movement of the guide member, opens the gate, and braking means between the guide member and the gate so that tension on the film moves the guide member and opens the gate. Fig. 2 shows a device according to the invention in a position in which the film gate is open. The gate comprises a fixed glass plate 8 and a movable glass plate 9 connected to movable members 19, 25 by arms 15, 21 respectively. These arms are pivoted to the device at 16, 22 respectively and are rigidly connected to arms 14, 20 which are also pivoted to the glass plate 9 at 10, .11 and to each other by a slot and pin connection 31. Thus, movement of one guide member results in a movement of the other guide member as well as in movement of plate 9. Springs. 18, 24 tend to keep the gate its closed position. Brakes are provided on each side of the gate and comprise fixed members, 42, 43, co-operating with movable members 40, 41 carried on pivoted arms 46, 47 and spring-urged into contact with the fixed members. Wind-up and wind-off reels, 4, 5 are provided for the film 60 and have handles 6, 7 respectively. On turning the handle 7 in the direction of the arrow, the tension in the film caused by the brakes lift the guide member 25 and opens the gate. When the knob F is released, the springs 18, 24 close the gate the: brakes preventing the film from moving in the gate; and film is unwound slightly from -.both reels. For loading and ;unloading the film, the plate 9 can be lowered to such an extent that guide members. 19, 25 are raised above the level of brake members 42, 43 and engage the arms 46, 47 to release the brakes.
