768,115. Counting-apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953], No. 36569/54. Class 106 (1). [Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A counting-device comprises electrical contacts 0-9 and a common segment 46 controlled by diametrically - opposite brushes 43 on a stepping wheel 41 to operate a digit representing element or readout means. The wheel 41 carries a ratchet-wheel 39 actuated in steps to be counted through a pawl 36 and a flexible element 10a. The element 10a is ineffective to transmit the steps to pawl 36, which is acted upon by a friction damping device 21a, until it is stiffened by being held against a guide element 29a by energization of an electromagnet 32a.
