Class 138(1) A motor vehicle has a windshield washing system by which liquid contained in a reservoir 11, Fig. 1, can be sprayed on to the windshield 1, and has a ventilation cowl opening 2 below the windshield, a channel 13 in the opening to collect water reaching the opening, and means for directing water from the channel to the reservoir. The rain collecting channel 13, has an outlet 15 connected by a tee member 19 to a vehicle roof rain collecting channel 14 and a pipe 16, to an inlet pipe 17 in the cover 12 of the washer reservoir 11. The washer pump 8, driven by a suction motor 9 controlled by a valve 10, is connected by a delivery line 7 and pipes 6 to spraying nozzles 5. The pipe 16, between the outlet 15 and inlet 17, is provided with a member 20 Fig. 4, having a lateral duct 21 connected to a hose 22 whereby excess rain water may be carried to waste below the vehicle. A screen 23 :in the member 20 prevents large particles in the rain water from entering the reservoir. Referring to Fig. 2, the inlet 17 connects with a chamber 34 provided with a fine screen 35 and filter pad 36. A sleeve 29 in the chamber 34 has a valve seat 25 closable by a valve 26 carried by a float 27, the stem 28 of the valve being slidable in the sleeve and having a top shoulder 33 to limit its downward valveopening movement. Clearly when the reservoir 11 is filled the valve 26 closes and rain water is thereafter carried away through the hose 22. In a modification the float chamber may have an aperture in its bottom wall and in a further modification the float is dispensed with and the reservoir is then provided with an .overflow pipe. In another embodiment the reservoir for the washer is in the form of a cupped plate welded to the bottom' of the cowl channel, the latter having an opening to connect it with the reservoir. This reservoir is connected at its bottom to the inlet of the remote pump and has an overflow pipe therein connected to a waste hose. Splashing of liquid in the reservoir is minimized by providing one or more splash plates therein and furthermore the overflow pipe is provided with a loose fitting cap.
