Abstract
767,721. Casting processes; electrodes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 8, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35259/53. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). Consumable electrodes for use in the arc - melting of highmelting-point reactive metals such as titanium, zirconium, molybdenium,' thorium, hafnium, chromium and their alloys, are made by feeding raw material in sponge, pellet, or other divided form to the melting- chamber of an arcmelting furnace at a higher rate than that consistent with complete melting of the raw material over the whole cross-section of the melting-chamber, whereby a coherent but incompletely melted mass of metal or alloy is built up. The furnace electrode may be of the consumable type made from the metal to be melted. In one embodiment, the pelleted material 1 is fed into a crucible 2, and heated sufficiently for the particles to commence to melt and adhere to one another, and the coherent mass 4 withdrawn by rolls 5, to project into a second crucible 6 where it acts as a consumable electrode to form, with additional raw material, a wholly melted electrode. The whole operation is carried out in an inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the electrode 4 may be removed when of a convenient length and melted in a separate firnace, or it may replace the electrode 3, the crucible 2 being replaced by a crucible of larger size into which the ingot is finally melted.
