Abstract

Crude polyethylene is refined to give uniform products by subjecting it to intensive mixing in an enclosed chamber under pressure. Mixing is effected by a plurality of rotating members which rotate at different peripheral speeds, initially for a period of not more than two minutes with the fastest member revolving at a peripheral speed of 200-285 feet per minute and under 20-30 lbs./sq. inch pressure and finally for such a period that the entire time of treatment is not less than five minutes with the fastest member rotating as above at a pressure of not more than 5 lbs./sq. inch, the walls of the chamber being cooled to 35-38 DEG F., throughout the mixing. In a modification for the production of moulding powder two additional steps carried out at lower speed are interposed between the initial and final mixing. The initial step, as before, is followed by a second step using a peripheral speed of 100-150 feet per minute and not more than 5 lbs. per sq. inch pressure for 2-4 minutes, and a third step using a speed of 100-150 feet per minute and 20-30 lbs. per sq. inch pressure, and the final mixing as above, the entire time being not less than 6 minutes. The process may be carried out in a Banbury-type mixer. The product may be used in injection moulding, extrusion and flame spraying. U.S.A. Specification 2,153,553 is referred to.
