Abstract

Mouldings are made by cold moulding a thermo-hardening composition comprising an ethoxyline resin, a hardening agent, 50 to 80 per cent by weight of the total composition of filling agents, and at least 5 per cent by weight of colloidal silcates, and then setting the resin by heating. Suitable ethoxyline resins are the condensation products of epihalogenohydrins, e.g. epichlorhydrin or dihalogenohydrins, e.g. dichlorhydrins with 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl-propane, 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenylmethane, 2,41-dihydroxydiphenylmethane, resorcinol or hydroquinone. Suitable colloidal silicates are kaolin and bentonite and the specified filler is slag wool. Hardening agents specified are the anhydrides of polybasic carboxylic acids, for example phthalic and maleic anhydrides, and inorganic and organic bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide, calcium oxide, guanidine, triethylamine and salts thereof, cyanamide, dicyandiamide, melamine and ethylene diamine. The composition is moulded at a pressure usually greater than 100 kgs./cm2 and is preferably heated in separate mould (see Group V). In the examples, a condensation product of 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl propane with epichlorhydrin as sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Araldite Type 1," is mixed with phthalic anhydride, kaolin and slag wool or bentonite and chalk and ground to an homogeneous mixture at a temperature of 60 DEG C. It is then moulded at a pressure of 3000 kgs./cm.2 and hardened at 140 DEG C. to make (a) a contact strip, and (b) a toothed wheel.
