767,233. Cutting by fusion. WERNER, W., MULLER, J., and MULLER, W. Oct. 11, 1954, No. 29281/54. Class 83 (4). In the joining of a cylindrical branch pipe 30 at an angle # to a cylindrical main pipe 31, apparatus for cutting a pipe such as 30 along a curved surface 32 to facilitate joining of the pipe to the other pipe 31, comprises means for rotating or oscillating the workpiece about its axis, a pair of levers 1, 2 pivotally connected together at 3 and each slidably mounted at 6, 7 respectively on a guide 4 parallel with the axis of the tube 30 to be cut, the lever 2 being further guided at 9 along a guide 5 perpendicular to the tube axis, the ratio of the length of lever 1 between points 3-6 to that of the lever 2 between points 3-7 being equal to the ratio of radius R of the main tube 31 to that of the branch tube 30, a cutting tool 8, such as a cutting torch, being connected. to move with the point and means for rotating or oscillating the lever 2 about point 9 in synchronism with the rotation or oscillation of the tube 30. For cutting the end of the branch pipe 30 the lever 2 is slidable at 7 along the guide 4 and at 9 along the perpendicular guide 5. The length R 3-6 of lever 1 is given by --, the length 3-7 sin # r of lever 2 by --, and the length 3-9 of lever 2 r sin 8 by --. The lever 2 rotates about the point 9 tan # at the same speed as the branch pipe is rotated. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, for cutting a hole 33 in the main pipe 31, the points 7 and 9 of lever 2 are reversed. The length 3-6 of lever 1 is given by R/tan #, the length 3-7 of lever 2 by r/tan and the length 3-9 of lever 2 by r/ sin # In this embodiment the pipe 31 oscillates about its axis and the lever 2 is rotated about the point 9 such that ratio of the sine of the angle of rotation of lever 2 to the sine of the angle of oscillation of the pipe 31 is R: r. To achieve this relationship a disc 12, Fig. 3, is connected to oscillate with the pipe 31 and freely mounted on its axis 11 is a slotted lever 10 carrying an adjustable runner 13 slidable in the slot 36 of a guide bar 15 depending from a guide rod 34. A pin 14 is fixed to the disc 12 and engages in the slot 36 whereby the oscillation of the disc 12 and hence the pipe 31 is synchronized with that of the lever 10 which is connected to actuate the lever 2, Fig. 2.
