Abstract

A volatile combustible liquid, such as a ketone or an alcohol, in liquid mixture with an incombustible liquid, such as water, and/or a liquid which is combustible but less volatile is contacted with an unreactive gas stream at a temperature such that the volatile liquid passes into the gas stream where it can be burnt with a combustion supporting gas, and preferably a catalyst, and the heat produced is measured and consequently the vapour content of the gas determined. The gas, which may be bubbled through the liquid mixture, may be the combustion supporting gas, e.g. air, however which under the condition of initial contact is unreactive.
