Abstract

The invention comprises polyformals of the general formula R1(OCH2OR)n in which R and R1 are aliphatic hydrocarbon groups or hydrocarbon groups, the carbon chains of which are interrupted by oxygen and/or sulphur atoms and n is 2, 3 or 4. They may be prepared by reacting a monohydric alcohol at elevated temperature with formaldehyde to produce a monoformal having the formula ROCH2OR and reacting the monoformal at elevated temperature in a second stage with a polyhydric alcohol of general formula R1(OH)n to produce the polyformal. The preferred monohydric alcohols used in the first stage of the process are the C1 to C60 alcohols, ether alcohols, particularly polyethylene alcohols, thio-ether alcohols containing not more than 2 atoms of sulphur per molecule and which may also contain oxy-ether links, and C8 to C13 oxo alcohols. Particularly preferred monohydric alcohols are 2-ethyl hexanol and 3.5.5-trimethyl hexanol. The polyhydric alcohols used in the second stage are preferably dihydric alcohols, especially polyethylene glycols and thioether glycols which may also contain thio-ether links. Preferably a catalyst of the acid type, e.g. hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, sulphamic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, sodium bisulphate, phosphoric acid and acidified ionexchange resins, is used. An inert liquid hydrocarbon may be used as water entrainer. Suitable ones are hexane, heptane, benzene, toluene and hydrocarbon mixtures boiling between 40 DEG and 150 DEG C. Preferred temperatures for the first stage are in the range 80 DEG to 120 DEG C. and in the second stage in the range 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. In an example 2-ethyl hexanol, paraformaldehyde and sodium bisulphate are heated in the presence of a paraffin mixture as water entrainer to give a monoformal which is heated with a polyethylene glycol to give the corresponding polyformal.ALSO:Polyformals having the general formula R1(OCH2OR)n in which n is 2, 3 or 4 and R and R1 are aliphatic hydrocarbon groups and carbon chains of which may be interrupted by oxygen and/or sulphur atoms, may be blended with mineral oils, other synthetic oils such as complex esters and diesters, silicones and polymerized hydrocarbons. The lubricant so obtained may also contain additives such as anti-oxidants, rust preventives, E.P. agents, pour point depressants and viscosity index improvers.
