766,841. Corrosion-resistant fabric. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 23, 1954 [Sept. 28, 1953], No. 26558/53. Class 140. [Also in Group XXVIII] A web or fabric of glass or mineral fibres is impregnated with a dispersion of polytetrafluorethylene in a volatilizable liquid medium, heated to remove the latter by evaporation, and is then subjected to pressure at an elevated temperature below the sintering temperature of the polytetrafluorethylene, the steps of impregnation, heating to evaporate the liquid and pressing at an elevated temperature are repeated at least once and finally the web or fabric is heated to sinter the polytetrafluorethylene. Pressures of 5 tons per square inch may be used. Temperature during the pressing steps may be 200‹ C. and during the final pressing before sintering may be 300‹ C. Sintering may be effected at 350‹ C. Pressure may be applied by platens or rolls. For continuous production, glass cloth may be run through a series of stages each comprising an impregnating bath or heated chamber and heated rolls to compress the impregnated fabric; and final passage through a chamber heated to sintering temperature.
