Abstract

766,606. Electric igniters. FENN, L. E. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 32076/54. Class 75(3) In a cigarette lighter in which a heating element is carried by a detachable igniting unit normally carried in a housing attached to a vehicle dashboard and in which the heating element can be connected to an electric current source while positioned in the housing the body of the igniter unit is surrounded by a sleeve slidable between a position exposing the heating element and a position in which it extends beyond and surrounds the heating element and is provided with parts which co-operate with the housing so that when the igniter unit is pushed into the housing and yieldably retained therein the sleeve-is moved to the heater exposing position and when withdrawn the sleeve is automatically pulled to the position surrounding heater element. A sleeve 36 slidably mounted on a collar 32 has an outwardly turned flange 43 at its front end which when. the igniter 13 is inserted in a tubular housing member 14, Fig. 1, on a vehicle dash-board, engages the front end 44 of the member 14 and slides the sleeve 36 over the collar 32 to expose the heating element 20. The sleeve 36, when the igniter 13 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, is held in position by a tongue 42 formed on the rear end of member 14 and engaging a groove in the sleeve 36 so that as the igniter is withdrawn from the member 14 the sleeve 36 is held in position within the housing 14 until a tongue 38 formed on the sleeve 36 abuts the end of a slot 39 in the collar 32 and the sleeve 36 is then withdrawn with the igniter 13 from the member 14 and remains in a position shrouding the heating element 20. The heating element 20 is mounted on a heat insulating bushing 23. The heating element 20 is energized by engaging a cup 22 carrying the heating element 20 with bimetallic spring fingers 18 which hold the cup 22 until expanded by heat and the igniter 13 is then moved forwards by a spring 30. The sleeves 36 may be provided with two grooves 36b and 45 for use in a housing with either short or long fingers 42.
