Abstract
A resinous composition comprising an N-methylol primary amine, a water-soluble ureaformaldehyde condensate and 10-60 per cent by weight of a non-reactive fibrous reinforcement can be cured at a pressure of 20 to 100 lbs. per square inch at a temperature of 110 DEG to 145 DEG C. The composition contains 0.25 to 0.65 parts by weight of formaldehyde, 0.25 to 0.65 parts by weight of urea and 0.003 to 0.25 parts by weight of amine, an added acid component, and has a pH of from 6.0 to 9.5. Specified amines are: (1) aminoalkanes having not more than four carbon atoms per NH2 group; (2) bis (amino-alkyl) ethers having not more than 4 carbon atoms per NH2 group, e.g. bis (3-aminopropyl) ether; (3) a primary amine containing 2 NH2 groups, e.g. hexamethylene diamine. Specified fibres are glass fibres and other inorganic fibrous material, fibrous polytetrafluoroethylene, fibrous polyhexamethylene adipamide and other nylon polyamides, fibrous polyacrylonitrile and fibrous polyesters. In Example 3, bis-(3-aminopropyl) ether was added to formalin (pH = 7.3). Urea was added (pH 7.8) and then sulphuric acid to adjust the pH to 7.2; glass mats were impregnated with the solution at room temperature, air dried overnight and then at 70 DEG to 90 DEG C. for 45 minutes. Curing was then effected at 110 DEG C. and 30 lbs. per square inch for 20 minutes. Specifications 572,245, [Group IV], 688,794 and 695,148, [Group VIII], are referred to.
