765,787. Measuring torque electrically. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1954 [Oct. 28, 1953], No. 29788/53. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for measuring the torque transmitted by a magnetic shaft 3 comprises two axially aligned recording heads 1, 2 which mark the circumference of the shaft simultaneously with equispaced marks 5, 6 under no load, and then act as pick-up heads when the shaft is under load to feed the sequence of pulses produced by the marks into a phasesensitive circuit wherein the displacement between the two series of marks 5, 6 caused by the distortion of the shaft produces a signal indicative of the magnitude of the distortion and therefore of the torque. The shaft may be only coated with magnetic material.
