Abstract

Solid impurities are removed from heavy fuel oils, and the oils are rendered suitable for use as fuels in internal combustion engines and gas turbines, by heating the oil to a temperature in excess of 100 DEG C. and then centrifuging the oil at this temperature in a centrifugal separator at the inlet of which normal pressure obtains and which is provided with means for substantially preventing the evaporating or escape of volatile constituents of the oil at the inlet and outlet. Centrifuging temperatures up to 150 DEG C. are specified. Heavy fuel oils mentioned are the residual oils remaining after fractional distillation or cracking of mineral oils, and mixtures of such residual oils with one another or with lighter oils. The oil may be centrifuged twice in succession, in the first stage at a temperature below 100 DEG C., in order to separate water and the coarser solid impurities from the oil, and in the second stage at a temperature above 100 DEG C., in order to free the oil from the remaining solids. Thus, a temperature of 90-95 DEG C. in the first stage, and of 125 DEG C. in the second stage, may be employed. Constructions of centrifuges are described in which means are provided for substantially preventing the evaporation or escape of volatile constituents of the oil at the inlet and outlet (see Group II).
